What the Research Reveals About Burnout, Retention, and the Future of Knowledge Work with Margaret Foley

Written by Kolmeo | 18 Sep, 2026

Our own Margaret Foley, sits down with Kylie Walker on the 'That Property Mum' podcast to unpack Australia's first independent study of over 400 property management professionals and what it reveals about burnout, retention, and where the industry goes from here.

While the standout finding is a hard one: 2 in 5 property managers say they're unlikely to still be in the role within two years, many of them the most experienced people in the industry, the more useful insight is what would keep them: clearer career pathways, real development, and systems that actually work, rather than simply less to do.

They discuss rethinking the role itself, suggesting that growth doesn't always have to mean stepping into people management, that experienced PMs are hungry for commercial skills rather than fewer tasks, and that and that AI's real value isn't the admin it removes, but the capacity it creates for investing in building relationships. As Margaret puts it:

“We use technology when it’s about how we get something done, but we use people when it’s about how we want someone to feel.”

The takeaway: treat the data as a starting point for better leadership, not proof that overwhelm is just part of the job.

Listen and Learn.

Hear Margaret reflect on the State of Property Management and what the data reveals about the way we move forward in the industry. Thanks The Property Management Podcast for this session.
